Hunger Awareness
Throughout the month of February 2010, John Wesley United Methodist Youth students participated in various activities to raise awareness for those affected by hunger and poverty.
Souper Bowl of Caring
Kicking off the month, our youth participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring where they raised over $500 and 200 canned good items.
30 Hour Famine for Haiti Relief
Following that, these students fasted for 30 hours as part of the 30 hour famine, raising money for Haiti Relief. The 30 hr famine raised over $3000. Additionally, youth provided 100 man hours of service to the Houston Food Bank, where they packaged over 360 family meal boxes. Funds raised by the students were matched with $2,500 from the Shannon Stovall Memorial Fund, so that over $6,000 will be donated toward Haiti Relief.
In January 2010, during Mosaic Worship Service, the proclamation of the Word, "Worship as Service, Service as Worship" was a hands-on, interactive mission service. Responding to the tragic earthquake in Haiti, approximately 200 layette kits were assembled and blessed in prayer by worshippers. The kits included baby blankets, undershirts, gowns, sleepers, washcloths, diapers and diaper pins. Funds from In Shannon Shoes helped to provide layette items. Assembled layette kits were mailed to UMCOR with the request that Haiti be the final destination.
Hunger Hunt for TEAM
To end the month, John Wesley Youth will be participating in a hunger hunt, to collect canned goods and donate them to TEAM, which operates a local food pantry in Tomball, Texas.
